Which generation do you belong to?<\/strong>
\nDuring the workshop by Iris G\u00fcndel on \u2018Generational Differences in the Workplace\u2019, organised by the Dutch Association of Mediation Lawyers (NVVMA), these and other generations were discussed. Funny to discover I belong to the \u2018French Fry Generation\u2019. Not a label I immediately identify with. Although I certainly appreciate a good portion of French fries every now and then. \ud83d\ude0a<\/p>\n

What\u2019s the importance of generational differences in the workplace?<\/strong>
\nPeople who grow up during a particular period belong to the same generation (e.g. those born between 2000-2015). This means they share a similar frame of reference. A frame that changes over time and therefore differs from one generation to another. Given there are 4 different generations in the workplace, it is important to recognise each and every one of them has its own perspective on \u2018work\u2019.
\nFor example, Baby Boomers often feel you should consider yourself lucky to have a job. Generation Y sees this totally differently. Job satisfaction comes first. A good work-life balance and flexibility are important.<\/p>\n

The minimum expectations regarding social interaction are also shifting. For example -unlike a Boomer- a Gen Z-er is used to having a say among family and friends. Consequently, at work, they will also expect to have a voice that is genuinely heard. A Boomer, on the other hand, may be more inclined to think: \u2018That\u2019s simply how we do things around here.\u2019 It is therefore not surprising different generations may sometimes clash on the workfloor.<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to Iris, generational differences should be embraced, rather than smoothed over.<\/strong> Differences between generations should be acknowledged and discussed. This allows us to learn from one another and strengthen each other, rather than clash with one another.<\/p>\n

As a business and employment mediator, I embrace this approach. At the mediation table, I always invite the parties to open themselves up to the other person\u2019s perspective.<\/strong> If we follow Iris\u2019 advice, mediation may not even be necessary, because a conflict can be avoided. That would of course be wonderful!
\nHowever, if parties find it difficult to bridge their differences -despite having a good conversation- I am of course happy to help using my expertise as a mediator:<\/p>\n
